Notes on the observation of the average U.S. citizen, circa October 27th, 2008
(source unknown)

The average height of a male human in the United States of America is 188 centimeters. Median age is 23 years. The average hair color is brown, with a median length of 4 centimeters. All subjects exhibit symptoms of the same minor health defects: allergy to animal fur, occasional palpitation of heartbeat, dry skin.

The average day begins approximately 240 minutes after sunrise, with the subject asleep in bed. After regaining consciousness, the subject will sit in bed and attempt to communicate with a partner. If no partners are present, the human will usually forage for something to ingest. If after this process the human remains alone, he or she will usually read a book while seeming unable to decide what to do next. All subjects were observed spending the morning in deep contemplation and were rarely seen to do anything of note.

Once contacted by another human, the subject's day changes dramatically. It is curious that the human seems to wait for the presence of another before interacting with the outside world. For our sample group this seemed universally true.

Consistent with our hypothesis, when left alone the human seemed to do nothing at all to engage its surroundings. More testing is necessary to determine whether this behavior is learned or innate. We suspect the sample population can be conditioned out of this stifling self-limitation.

My team will give notice with any development. We mustn't forget our duty to improve the quality of life of the average human. Our future depends on symbiosis and we do not take our jobs lightly.

<lj:music>"Highschool in PA" mixtape from Jess</lj:music>

1919 is sooo cold! i hung out with joe this evening. as it turns out, joe is a very cool guy. it was a girl's birthday party and 90% of the people at the show were very young and new to the idea of a radical shared space. i think it was a really positive event in spite of the oppressive cold and low turnout. this band called The Lashouts, with '50s pin-up girls printed on their amps, were the official soundtrack to having a goatee. they were very talented. i spent most of the show talking to the birthday-girl's mother about 1919 and its neighbors, and now she wants to donate all the junk in her garage. (we gave her ramsey's email address)

i tidied up the free-store a bit more and brought home two books: 50 Great American Short Stories and Exploring Painting. which reminds me, i've been downloading The Joy of Painting with Bob Ross - Season XVI for three days now and its finally finished. now i am going to go eat beans and rice and daydream about making out with my grrlfriend.

LIST OF THINGS THAT SHOULDN'T HAPPEN TO A PERSON a.k.a. THINGS THAT HAVE HAPPENED TO ME

MY MOM
------
my mom passed away at 1:10am on October 30th. it was very peaceful. in bed her breathing became shallow and my dad told her that she was strong and that she could go if she wanted to. she was with her friends the evening before and my brothers were visiting them only a day before. i was in london having the time of my life, which i think she wanted. her memorial is tomorrow at 10am at St. Ann's on Alsbury in Burleson. sorry to those who i haven't had a chance to invite. i seriously won't be offended if you don't come. i'll be embarassed participating in mass because my mom really wanted me to. plus i got a suit today and it doesnt fit.

BWI AIRPORT
-----------
3rd November, last night: on the way back from the UK we had an overnight layover. we didn't have a hotel or anything so we asked around to find a place that would be safe to sleep at the airport. Craig Jackson of the Maryland Aviation Administration told us we could sleep on the "Upper Observation Gallery" which was to be closed to the public overnight. the cleaning staff practically escorted us there, and hung out with us while we "unwound". and after checking my emails they left us alone, and i put my laptop in my carry-on bag and fell asleep.

something should be said about my carry-on bag. my mom always told me to keep my valuables in my carry-on bag, for obvious reasons. which i did, rather than keep them in my luggage. the irony is that when i woke up at 4am, my clothes were still there but my carry-on bag was 100% missing.

MY BAG
------
inside my bag, as best i can remember, were:

1. my laptop (with all best fwends art and music, finished and in progress, as well as years of my samples, other work and stuff. not backed up anywhere else. please don't comment about this, i don't need any help coming up with "what if"s)
2. my passport, and wallet, social security card, other important shit like that.
3. all of my money. (enough money to do some very productive things. things i've been aching to do for so so so long and now i am penniless.)
4. letters/scraps/mementos (i'm furious about this)
5. my headphones/CD/tape player (I DONT EVEN HAVE HEADPHONES NOW)
6. my iPod shuffle (with BF instrumentals)
7. my american cell phone and my UK cellphone, and my oyster card

8. i'll finish this list later its making me depressed to do this

THE REPORT
----------
SO i asked for the police. and this guy Edgar Caraballo (cop serial #1166) of the Maryland Transportation Authority Police comes up to the Observational Gallery.

Cop: "Who has the problem?"
Me: "...Hello sir... My bag containing 100% of my valuables was stolen. My passport, my wallet, my laptop, everything..."
Cop: "Well what do you want me to do about it?"
Me: [confused...helpless?] "Uhhh. I don't know, it was stolen from me."
Cop: "What were you doing up here? I need to see some ID."
Me: "It was stolen...I'm sorry, I have nothing left."
Cop: [pointing to Dustin] "What about you, let me see some ID. You're not supposed to be up here"
Both of us: "We got permission"
Cop: "Nobody can give you that permission"
Me: "Craig Jackson of Landside Operations--"
Dustin: "--From the MAA, we got permission"
Cop: "Hold on. Nobody can give you that permission. Only we can, the Police. You're not supposed to be up here."

it went on just like that. i asked about security tapes and the cop suggested that they wouldn't matter. the cop took the details and "filed a report". My copy of the report was a scrap of paper with a number scribbled on it. He told me that they'd take care of it.

When I called from Atlanta (my next layover on this horrific journey) the cops had changed shifts (that explains a lot) and on the phone (Corporal Hanks(?) who was very polite) said Caraballo hadn't filed the report. I begged him to find someone to review surveillance and/or look in a dumpster for my bag. Eventually I called back and found out that nobody would do anything until Edgar Caraballo got back on duty.

We suspect the cleaning staff. My only valuable possession in the world is a Travel Scrabble set and I'll never lose it.

[the following journal was written by Sivad "Otatop" Ynohtna, a being from another dimension]

In just over a day from now, the one you know as "Rick" will become 24, thereby losing another year from his life. Only days after this yadhtrib, Rick will begin a long fruitless employment at a place called Kroger, while tirelessly doing many nice things for the [future] international mega-corporation 1919 Hemphill.

Of course in your time you know 1919 to be a fledgling community space and you know Rick to be one of its most dedicated and responsible members. Little do you realize that in the year 2012, cyborg lord Rupert Murdoch himself will personally hunt down and kill Rick and many other friends of 1919 just before buying the little space and turning it into a 24-hour-a-day homeless-person-generator (the popularity of which are surprisingly unexplainable even with the huge amount of sociology degrees your era generated).

But ah yes, back to your present. ...Hmm. I'm trying to think of other notable happenings in this Earth-human's life. Ah yes! After being in a nearly infinite list of (according to my people) talentless and misguided bands, he will join a band called Retro-Spectro, hailed by many in my dimension as "the ultimate party band (of 21st century Earth)". Ah yes now I'm remembering. Wasn't that the band with the infamous child molester Dustin Pilkington, and the man who discovered the use of arcane magic, Anthony Davis? And if memory serves me correctly, the drummer of that band becomes the first man to have his legs surgically attached to his torso and his arms attached to his groin. He is amazing to behold but his life ends in misery.

The purpose of this message, finally, is to warn Rick of great catastrophies that only he can prevent.
